Cardiac arrest is a life-threatening medical emergency requiring immediate intervention through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced life support measures (American Heart Association [AHA], 2024). The timely and effective execution of resuscitation protocols by nurses significantly influences patient survival rates and neurological outcomes (Adeyemi et al., 2023).
Resuscitation guidelines emphasize high-quality chest compressions, early defibrillation, effective airway management, and adherence to advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) protocols (Eze & Mohammed, 2024). However, in many healthcare facilities, including those in Nigeria, inconsistencies in nurses’ compliance with these protocols have been reported, often due to inadequate training, lack of refresher courses, and high workload (Olumide & Bassey, 2023).
At Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, where emergency cases are frequent, evaluating nurses’ compliance with resuscitation protocols is essential in improving patient outcomes. Studies have suggested that hospitals with well-trained nurses and strict adherence to resuscitation guidelines have higher survival rates among cardiac arrest patients (Ogunleye et al., 2024).
Despite the availability of resuscitation protocols, reports indicate that many nurses do not fully comply with established guidelines, leading to suboptimal patient outcomes in cardiac arrest cases (Ajibade & Hassan, 2023). Factors such as inadequate knowledge of updated protocols, lack of simulation-based training, and resource constraints contribute to non-compliance (Adebayo & Omoniyi, 2024).
At Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, the effectiveness of resuscitation efforts is highly dependent on the preparedness and compliance of nurses. However, gaps in training and inconsistencies in resuscitation practices may lead to poor survival rates among cardiac arrest patients (Okafor et al., 2023). This study aims to evaluate the level of nurses’ compliance with resuscitation protocols and identify areas for improvement.
This study will focus on nurses working in emergency and critical care units at Federal Medical Centre, Keffi. It will evaluate their adherence to resuscitation protocols and its effect on patient outcomes. Limitations may include variations in training backgrounds and differences in hospital emergency response capacities.
